Crazy January Challenge 2011

We have so many chart in our stashes, so let's start stitching them!
The rules are simple:
1. Start stitching a new design every day, from January 1st to 15th.
So by January 15th you have 15 new WIP's to stitch.
2. Try and finish everything you started during the year 2011!
3. Show photos in your blog if you have one, in January and during
the whole year while you stitch, as we all love to see photos!

Some blogs are keeping track of participants. If you are interested in
this leave a comment with your blog address and I will create a list.
Have fun stitching!!
Thank you to Minna for sharing this challenge on her blog.

Australia

After travelling for 33 1/2 hours I made it to Shepparton! It took me a few days to recover which worked out well since my son and his fiancee had to work the rest of the week anyway. I love the landscape and all the gnarly gum trees. The houses are all brick and the majority are single story. Since wood is at a premium the fences are made of steel. The town is very clean. It is strange to see everyone driving on the wrong side of the street. and parking on the sides and the center of roads. The whole flow of traffic seems better though with fewer lights and heaps of round-a-bouts.
I actually have been to two embroidery stores already. One called "Spotlight" which carries a wide range of linens and beddings and then every imaginable craft. I picked up some DMC kits with Australian flora and fauna. These will be great reminders of our trip to the Kyabram Fauana Park. This has been the highlight of my trip so far. Getting to see and pet wallabies! Then seeing huge kangaroos, emus, lots of beautiful birds, stick bugs, koalas and a tasmanian devil. How cool is that.
Matt took me to Castlemaine, just over two hours from Shepparton just to see an embroidery show celebrating EGV's 50th anniversary.(How many sons would do that for their Mom!?) we stopped in Bendigo for lunch at Hungry Jack's .... Australians version of Burger King. We carried on to the show which was located in the local museum and art gallery. There were many beautiful pieces. It was layed out nicely in a long narrow room. I took heaps of pictures and then bought their commemorative book. It was strange though because with our shows we usually have members welcoming and gaurding our stitching but there was no one representing the guild.
We then went for a walk about and browsed a local book store where I picked up two lovely books. "The Magic of The Forest" by Jan Woodman and "Beadwork A World Guide" by Caroline Crabtree and Pam Stallebrass. I took a number photos of the local buildings which are adorned with lovely Victorian gingerbread.
On the trip home we stopped again in Bendigo to take some photos of a spectacular church, Sacred Heart Cathedral. It is one of the largest churches in Australia, so big in fact I couldn't even get the whole thing in a single shot.
As we were passing through a small town called Kangaroo Flats Matt decided to stop and check his tire pressure. The gas station was right beside Rajmahal Threads. You can check it out at www.rajmahal.com.au/ I could have spent a small fortune there, but I managed a little restraint and only purchased one kit, Jacobean Fantasy.
Well, I will close out now and update with more news from Australia in a few days.

Happy Groundhog Day!

Well it's hard to believe that January has come and gone already. I have a feeling this year is just going to fly by. I haven't posted in a month but I have been busy trying to complete some of my UFO's!
I have finished my first hex for my Quaker Quilt. It is a motif of two birds sitting on a vase and stitched in Gloriana's Elizabethan Green. Here are some of the fabrics I have collected for the quilt and the palette of silks I will stitch with. Most are Gloriana threads but there is one Needle Point Silk and one Belle Soie. As I said before this will be quite a large project ... perhaps a lifetime one but I am excited to have started and have collected alot of motifs, fabric and threads for the project.

Some friends and I went on a road trip a week ago to Salt Spring Island where we enjoyed the small shop of Treenway silks. It is something to see the whole collection of silk thread and ribbons laid out before you. Lots of eye candy there. You can check them out at their website:

One of my purchases was some plain silk floss which I am going to attempt to dye myself. I played around a little yesterday with a 5 yard swatch and will post a picture after I stitch a piece with it. We had a nice lunch at Moby's, shopped and then headed home. It was a fun day out!

On Saturday I attended my 5th Nanaimo Quilt Bee. This event is held annually at the end of January. Women come together in teams and quilt all day, some ladies actually finish but most teams only complete the top of the quilt. At the next guild meeting the quilts are collected and donated to Haven House, a local charity that provides help to those who have experienced violence. The first two years I just helped with the kitchen and the last three I have been on a team we call the three B's ... Bonnie, Blanche and Betty. Blanche is 92 and quilts like a dream. Bonnie keeps us organized and does most of the sewing. I press and pin and later add the binding. We have alot of fun together and I am looking forward to participating again next year.

I have a couple of designs in the works and will post pics when I have completed them. Let's just say one has something do to with scissors and the other tea! That's all the hints I'm going to give.
FYI .... I am starting another blog strictly related to my Bailey genealogy and will post the link to that next time .... in case anyone is interested.
